Red fuming nitric acid experiment. Footage of a demonstration of the oxidising power of red fuming nitric acid (RFNA) when used on laboratory safety gloves. Nitric acid (HNO3) is a highly corrosive mineral acid. At concentrations above 95 percent it is referred to as red fuming nitric acid. In this clip, the red fuming nitric acid is poured from a bottle into a beaker, and a pipette is used to add it to a laboratory safety glove (left). As the oxidation occurs, the glove catches fire. Halfway through the clip, the footage speeds up and the glove is oxidised to a charred crisp. | |
