Molecule of the amide ethanamide (acetamide). Amides are molecules containing a carbonyl group (C=O, with carbon black and oxygen red) bonded to a nitrogen atom (blue). The amide bond contains delocalised electrons, with the lone pair of electrons on the nitrogen joining the electrons in the carbonyl group, forming a partial double bond between the nitrogen and carbon. This means that the atoms around the nitrogen are planar, rather than pyramidal as in amines. This type of bond is called a peptide bond when it forms the link between amino acids in proteins. | |
