Electrical conductivity of SF6. Clip showing the non-conductivity of the dense colourless gas sulphur hexafluoride (SF6). At the start of the clip, the beaker contains air and the electrical discharge (corona discharge, purple spark) takes place because air can conduct electricity if the voltage is high enough to cause ionisation. However, this does not occur with sulphur hexafluoride, which is being piped into the beaker. As this dense gas flows to the bottom of the beaker, it displaces the air and stops the electrical discharge. For a close-up of the electrical discharge in air, see clip K004/5565. | |
