Electrolysis of lead (II) bromide. Footage of electrodes suspended in a crucible containing lead (II) bromide. Electrical power is provided by a power pack and a bunsen burner is being used to heat the crucible and keep the lead (II) bromide molten. In its molten state, it will conduct electricity. Electrolysis of ionic solutions or ionic melts causes the ions to be deposited at electrodes of the opposite polarity. In this case, the negative bromide ions are deposited at the anode, forming bromine gas (Br2, fumes). Molten lead (Pb) is deposited at the cathode. For clips showing stages in this electrolysis, see K004/5371 to K004/5374. | |
