Ruby corundum. Corundum is a crystalline form of aluminium oxide (Al2O3) with traces of iron, titanium and chromium. Ruby is a red or pink variety of the mineral; the colour is caused mainly by the presence of the element chromium. The natural mineral is cut and polished to produce ruby gemstones. In addition to their importance as gemstones, rubies are used in industry as jewelled bearings in watches and scientific instruments. | |
