Rock salt. Multiple cubic crystal of halite or rock salt, a naturally occurring sodium chloride (NaCl). Rock salt is most common in nature as a sedimentary precipitate, resulting from the evaporation of saline waters, usually saline lakes. Rock salt crystals fit in the cubic crystal system and have an isometric hexoctahedral crystal symmetry. Large, well-developed crystals are rare as they are unstable unless stored in zero moisture conditions. | |
