Four pond skaters (Gerris sp.) on the surface of water, seen through an interferometer. Pond skaters are predatory aquatic insects that live on the water surface of ponds and slow-moving rivers. They do not sink or get wet as they rest on the thin skin formed by surface tension. Their legs and bodies are covered in tiny hydrophobic hairs, which prevent them wetting. Using interferometry, the pressure that their limbs put on the water surface can be seen. Where their legs depress the surface of the water bands of colour are seen, due to interference of the transmitted light. | |
