Larva of a great diving beetle (Dytiscus marginalis). Like the adult, the larva is a voracious predator, a habit that has earned it the common name water tiger . While the adult is an active hunter, the larva rests perfectly still and waits for prey to pass, before grabbing it in its large jaws. It takes a wide range of prey, including insects, tadpoles and small fish. | |
