Light microscope footage of cells from the petal of a tulip (Tulipa sp.) showing turgor. This is a condition in which the cells absorb water from a hypotonic solution, resulting in them swelling and pressing against their rigid cell wall. Turgor is a normal, healthy state for plant cells, and it is turgor pressure that gives plants their rigidity. Loss or turgor pressure causes cells to be plasmolysed or flaccid, and the plant wilts. See clip K004 2361 for the same cells in a plasmolysed state. | |
