Light microscope footage of cells from the petal of a tulip (Tulipa sp.) showing plasmolysis. This is a condition in which the cells lose water in a hypertonic solution, resulting in the contents of the cell detaching from the rigid cell wall, leaving large gaps (pale areas). On a macroscopic level, this leads to the plant wilting. See clip K004 2363 for the same cells in their normal turgid state. | |
