Bee stealing nectar from a nasturtium flower (Tropaeolum majus). This flower carries nectar in a long spur at the back of the flower. This evolved to be food for its natural pollinator, the hummingbird, which has a long bill that can reach the base of the spur. The plant is widely cultivated outside its native South and Central America, however. In areas like Europe, which lack hummingbirds, pollination is carried out by large insects. The nectar is out of reach of their mouthparts, and some insects instead just bore through the side of the spur to feed on the nectar within. | |
