Close-up of the inside of an Arum italicum flower head, showing owl midges (Psychoda sp.) clambering over female flowers. The midges are covered in pollen from another flower. Arum flowers are a trap for insects, in which a ring of hairs allow insects in but not out. While trapped they cover themselves in pollen, after which the hairs drop away, releasing the insect and allowing it to pollinate another flower. For more views of this, see clips K004 2247-2252.
