Naturalist using a pencil to remove the pollen heads from the flower of a bee orchid (Ophrys apifera). The bee orchid flower mimics a female bee, and releases female bee pheromones to attract a male bee. The male bee attempts to mate with the flower, and in the process these pollen heads (yellow) stick to it, and it pollinates the next bee orchid flower it attempts to mate with. The mimicry and pheromones are specific to the Eucera bee. See clips K004 2245-2246 for a bee on this flower. | |
