Trinity nuclear test. Footage of the fireball and 'mushroom cloud' formation following the detonation of the world's first atomic bomb in the desert near Alamogordo Air Base, New Mexico, USA, at 05:29 local time on 16 July 1945. The test detonation was part of the Manhattan Project carried out by the USA during World War II. The test, codenamed 'Trinity', used plutonium, and had an explosive power equivalent to 21, 000 tons of TNT. The flash from the explosion could be seen 640 kilometres away, and the shock wave was felt 80 kilometres away. The mushroom cloud reached a height of 12 kilometres. This test was followed later that year by the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan. | |
