Plant cell organelles. Animation showing close-ups and inset details of the different organelles found in a plant cell. The first close-up shows the endoplasmic reticulum (orange) and nucleus (blue). The next close-up shows the Golgi apparatus, the site of protein packaging and transport. The third close-up shows a mitochondrion (red), the site of energy production in a cell. The fourth close-up shows a microtubule (blue and yellow), part of the cytoskeleton of the cell. The next close-up shows the structure of the cell's plasma membrane with proteins embedded in it. The sixth close-up shows a chloroplast (green), a structure found only in plant cells that is the site of photosynthesis. The next close-up shows an actin filament (green), part of the cytoskeleton of the cell. The eighth close-up shows ribosomes (blue on red chain), the site of protein synthesis. The ninth and final close-up shows peroxisome (green in blue sphere), an important organelle involved in the oxidative metabolism. Visible in the overall view is the vacuole (blue), a large water pocket containing a variety of micromolecules like minerals and sugars. The cell wall (not found in animal cells) consists of cellulose fibrils and makes the cell rigid. For this animation with labels, see K004/0944. | |
