Fluorescence confocal microscopy of the chromosome arrangement in a cell during metaphase. Metaphase is part of the cell cycle in which the chromosomes have condensed into dense coiled structures, and move to form a flat metaphase plate. Along the plate the central centromeres of each chromosome form a line, and the faces of the plate face each of the centrosome poles. In the next stage of the cell cycle, these poles pull the chromosomes apart at their centromeres, bringing half of them to each side of the cell, prior to the cell dividing into two identical daughter cells. This cell has been transfected with a fluorescent label to the histone protein H2B, which highlights the chromosomes in bright yellow.
