Timelapse footage of the planet Jupiter rotating. Jupiter is a gas giant planet, and only the tops of its clouds are visible. The famous Great Red Spot, a huge anticyclonic storm system, is seen in the second half of the clip. It usually resides in a prominent dark belt called the Southern Equatorial Belt, similar in appearance to the red-brown Northern Belt above. However the SEB periodically disappears, for reasons that are poorly understood. Filmed with a 14-inch Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope in September 2010. | |
