ATP synthase complex (FoF1 complex) producing ATP (adenosine triphosphate), animation. The ATP synthase protein is a transmembrane protein made up of two major parts, F1 and F0. In the first few frames the membrane spanning protein bacteriorhodopsin (purple) captures energy from light and uses this energy to pump protons (green) into a phospholipid vesicle. ATP synthase can then be seen acting as a molecular motor. The protons flow through a channel created within the F0 part of the protein (blue) causing it to spin. The F1 section (red) binds ADP(adenosine diphosphate) and inorganic phosphate and the energy provided by the rotating channel is used to drive the synthesis of ATP. | |
