Centrosome and microtubule movement, animation. The centrosome is an area within the cell where microtubules are produced. It is made up of a pair of organelles called centrioles, shown more at right. The microtubules extend outwards from the centrosome and are shown at left. Both of these cell structures play an important role during the cell cycle when they separate the cell's chromosomes and distribute them to the daughter cells.
