Model of ocean currents with sea surface temperatures. Temperatures are colour-coded from dark blue (zero degrees Celsius) to red (30 degrees). The large-scale pattern of global currents is clearly seen, including the westward-flowing equatorial currents, the warm northeastward-flowing Gulf Stream, the very cold eastward-flowing Antarctic Circumpolar current, and the circular Agulhas Rings that move northwest from South Africa. Ocean currents are generally created and maintained by prevailing surface winds, which in turn are established by the Coriolis effect of the Earth's rotation. The data were gathered from 10th January 2005 to 10th January 2006, and visualised using NASA's ECCO2 model. | |
