Rotavirus particles, animation. Rotavirus is an extremely common virus, endemic worldwide in human populations. It infects nearly everyone during the first few years of life, causing diarrhoea, vomiting and fever. The disease is self-limiting and rarely causes serious illness, although care should be taken to avoid dehydration. A first attack confers immunity, and subsequent infections usually produce no symptoms. It is spread through the diarrhoea, but sanitation has proved unable to stop the virus. Vaccines have been developed in recent years, and mass vaccinations have shown a protective effect. The World Health Organisation recommends that all children be vaccinated. Rotavirus is a member of Reoviridae, and has double-stranded RNA genetic material. | |
