Animation showing how the Moon and Sun cause tides on Earth. The gravitational pull of the Moon and Sun draw Earth's water towards them. When the Moon and the Sun are aligned, either both on the same side (new Moon) or on either side (full Moon) of the planet, the water is pulled more strongly, causing so-called spring tides . When the Moon and Sun are at right angles (first and last quarter Moons), the effect is much weaker, and the tides are the so-called neap tides . As the Moon orbits roughly once a month, there are tow spring and two neap tides a month. As the Earth rotates each day, there are two tides each day in most locations.<br>Restrictions: |
