Annular and Total Solar Eclipse. An annular eclipse (where the Moon appears smaller than the Sun and a ring of the Sun is visible around the Moon) occurs when the Moon is further from Earth during the eclipse, and thus appears smaller in the sky. A total eclipse occurs when the Moon is closer and appears larger. In this case, a band of totality (the umbra) crosses the Earth's surface. | |
