Animation showing the formation of the Moon. This is thought to have occurred due to the impact of a smaller protoplanet with the early Earth, some 4.5 billion years ago. The impact vaporised the outer layers of the colliding body. Much of its iron and other dense metals was lost to Earth, while the lighter rocks mixed with those in Earth's upper layers. The ejecta from the impact eventually coalesced to form the Moon. The impacting body is sometimes called Theia. | |
