Sea surface temperatures from 2002 to 2006. The colours represent surface temperatures, ranging from dark blue (coolest) through green and yellow to orange (warmest). The seasonal change in the surface temperatures is seen as the warmest part moves north and south, tracking the summers. The thin tongue of cool water extending westwards from northern South America is a mild La Nina event, part of an irregular cycle called the El Nino Southern Oscillation.
