Giant tube worms (Riftia pachyptila) clustered around a hydrothermal vent, or black smoker, on the deep ocean floor. These invertebrates host symbiotic bacteria in dark red plumes at their top end. Far beyond the reach of sunlight, the bacteria are able to process the inorganic sulphurous material abundant in the water around the vents, turning it into organic material on which the worms feed. This footage was filmed on the East Pacific Rise in 1979, by the submersible Alvin. | |
