Serotonin reuptake inhibition. Animation of the inhibition of the reuptake of molecules of the neurotransmitter serotonin. The release of serotonin is reversible, with specific biochemical processes causing it to be taken back up again by the cells that released it. This ends the stimulation caused by the release. Drugs can be used to inhibit this reuptake process. This animation is part of a sequence showing the effects of serotonin in the brain and nervous system. Serotonin is an important neurotransmitter in the brain. A lack of it has been shown to cause depression. It is this property which has led to the development of the SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor) antidepressants. | |
