Wide field fluorescein angiogram of a retina affected by proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) - 5 minutes from the point of injection. PDR involves new abnormally weak blood vessels that have developed on the retina's surface and in the vitreous gel. These vessels rupture easily releasing blood into the vitreous causing vision obstruction. They can also leak fluid into the centre of the macula causing macular edema and blurred vision. Blood clots and weak vessels can form scar tissue which shrinks and pulls on the retina. This sometimes causes tractionl retinal detachments | |
