Mitosis. Light micrograph of a whitefish cell in late prophase, the first stage of mitosis (nuclear division). Mitosis is the formation of two daughter nuclei from one parent nucleus. During prophase the chromosomes, which contain 2 identical chromatids and are made of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA,black),condense into defined units, allowing organised and equal segregation into daughter cells. Also the nuclear envelope breaks down, allowing microtubules (brown) to interact with the chromosomes. Microtubules are protein filaments that form spindles, which attach to the chromosomes and pull the sister chromatids to opposite poles of the cell | |
