Black hole. Computer model of the turbulent accretion disc around a rotating (Kerr) black hole. The amount of red shift (doppler shift) decreases from red to blue. Red shift occurs when a light source moves away from an observer, causing its wavelength to be increased. The turbulence slows the orbiting matter in the disc, allowing it to fall into the hole. Turbulent discs around huge black holes may be the source of the radiation associated with quasars. Black holes are regions where the gravitational field is so strong that light cannot escape.
