Aram Chaos impact crater on Mars, coloured satellite image. Aram chaos is 280 kilometres wide and is characterised by chaotic terrain. The terrain within it now comprises large-scale remnant massifs, large relief masses that have been moved and weathered as a block. It is thought that the many chaotic regions in the eastern part of Valles Marineris were the source of water or ice that created the valleys extending into the Chryse Planitia (not seen). This false colour image was captured on 14th October 2004 by the High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) on board ESA's Mars Express spacecraft. The ground resolution is approximately 14 metres per pixel | |
