Kasei Valles,Mars, looking west. Satellite image of the northern branch of the Kasei Valles region on Mars, one of the biggest outflow channel systems on the planet. The channel system was probably formed by gigantic flood events around 3.5 billion years ago and by later glacial activity. The water was ultimately lost, however, due to the thin Martian atmosphere and weak gravity. The image was taken by the High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) on board ESA's Mars Express spacecraft,on 26th February 2005. The ground resolution is approximately 29 metres per pixel | |
