Mitosis. Fluorescence micrograph of a cell during prometaphase of mitosis (nuclear division). During mitosis two daughter nuclei are formed from one parent nucleus. Before prometaphase, chromosomes (green) condense into defined units, allowing organised and equal segregation into daughter nuclei. Chromosomes are made up of two identical chromatids. At prometaphase the nuclear envelope breaks down, allowing microtubules (red) and cytoplasmic proteins (blue) to interact with the chromosomes. Microtubules are protein filaments that form spindles, which attach to the chromosomes and pull the sister chromatids to opposite poles of the cell | |
