Electroretinograms. Screen display of the results of a normal multifocal electroretinogram (MFERG) eye test (upper frame) and one showing the pres- ence of a detached retina. MFERG allows the early detection of eye diseases. During the test, the patient looks at a pattern of flickering hexagons. Light-sensitive retinal cells in their eyes change this light into electrical signals. The signals are detected by electrodes on the face and eyeli- ds,and converted into visual response maps (upper & lower right). The health of the different areas of the eye can be assessed,as each hexagon is seen by a separate bit of the retina. This test is being developed at Glasgow University,Scotland | |
