Ozone pollution research. Part of a FACE (Free-Air CO2/O3 Enrichment) ring for studying the effects of ozone (O3) and carbon dioxide (CO2) pollution on plants. O3 and/or CO2 are supplied through the ring (across bottom) and pumped into the air from the top of the 2.5-metre-tall pipes (white). These trees have been damaged by ozone from the FACE ring. Ozone is a pollutant gas formed by chemical reactions between oxygen and pollutants in the lower atmosphere. The levels of ozone are expected to rise with increased industrialisation and temperature changes. Carbon dioxide increases plant growth, but ozone reduces it. The FACE site, started in 1989,is in Wisconsin,USA | |
