Mount Etna erupting. Satellite image of a smoke plume from the volcano Mount Etna during its eruption in autumn 2002. The plume (brown, centre) is being blown southwards from Mount Etna, which occupies the eastern part of the Italian island of Sicily. Etna is the largest and most active volcano in Europe, and stands 3323 metres above sea level. It continuously experiences minor eruptions, but this was on a much larger scale. Numerous earthquakes opened up fissures on its flanks, and lava flowed down its northern and southern sides. Photographed by the MODIS instrument on the Aqua satellite on 28th October 2002 | |
