Phytoplankton in the Bay of Biscay, satellite image. Phytoplankton are minute free-floating aquatic plants, seen here as light blue swirls in the centre of the image. They are algae which often thrive in bays where the water's movement is relatively restricted and there is pollution from fertilisers. To the north (top) contrails, high altitude ice crystals produced from the engines of aeroplanes, criss cross the image; appearing as long, thin clouds. The snow-covered Pyrenees are seen in the bottom right. Taken by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer on NASA's Terra satellite | |
