Ozone sensor held in a pair of hands. The sensor is the white box (centre left). The plastic tube (upper right) is the intake tube, and the white structure (upper centre) is the pump to pass air through the sensor. It is an ECC (Electrochemical Concentration Cell),and detects ozone by the flow of an electric current as ozone reacts with the chemicals in the cell. The sensor, carried high into the atmosphere by a weather balloon,is used to study the polar depletion (ozone holes) of the ozone layer that protects Earth from ultraviolet (UV) radiation in sunlight.
