MODEL RELEASED. Weather balloon being inflated by a meteorologist. He is using helium gas that will lift the balloon many kilometres through the atmosphere at night. Hydrogen gas is used for day launches. A measuring device attached below the balloon will measure ozone distribution to an altitude of 35-40 kilometres,allowing study of the ozone layer at 20-30 kilometres. Ozone at this level (formed by sunlight) absorbs the dangerous types of ultraviolet (UV) radiation in sunlight. Chlorinated gases used by humans have decreased polar ozone levels,increasing exposure to this UV radiation at high latitudes.
