Smoke (grey) is being blown south-west over the Mediterranean Sea,while the smoke plume at upper right is passing over the capital city of Athens. This image was obtained on 26 August 2007,near the height of the fires. This was the worst season of forest fires in Greece for over 50 years,damaging thousands of square kilometres of land,and killing 84 people.
