Great Mississippi Flood,1927. Dynamiting of one of the levees holding back the Mississippi River at Caernarvon,Louisiana,USA,in 1927. This is part of the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927,when heavy rains caused the Mississippi River to burst its banks and levees in 145 places in six states, flooding thousands of square kilometres of land up to 10 metres deep in water. This deliberate breach of a levee was intended to save New Orleans from flooding, but breaches further upstream meant the sacrifice of this land to the floodwaters proved unecessary. The Mississippi has a long history of floods, and the 1927 one was among the worst | |
