Erosion on Mars. Curiosity rover image. These are sedimentary rock deposits in the Gale Crater on Mars. The rocks here were exposed 70 million years ago by ongoing wind erosion. The features here, part of the 'Yellowknife Bay' formation, include Point Lake (upper centre),the Gillespie Lake (centre left),and Sheepbed (below Gillespie Lake). At centre right are the Cumberland and John Klein drill sites. The Curiosity rover is part of the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) mission. It landed on Mars on 6 August 2012,on a mission to investigate the Martian climate and geology. Image obtained with the Mast Camera (Mastcam) on 24 December 2012 | |
