Vortex on Titan,Cassini image. Close-up true-colour view of the south pole vortex in Titan's atmosphere at about 200 to 300 kilometres altitude. Titan is the largest moon of the planet Saturn. It has an atmosphere of nitrogen, with traces of hydrocarbons such as methane and ethane. The formation of this vortex over Titan's south pole indicates the effect of the changing seasons on the circulation pattern in Titan's atmosphere. Cooler air sinks down from warmer, high altitudes. This image was obtained on 27 June 2012 by the Cassini spacecraft's narrow-angle camera at a distance of around 484,000 kilometres from Titan | |
