The Wankel engine is a type of internal combustion engine that uses an eccentric rotary design to convert pressure into a rotating motion instead of using reciprocating pistons. From left to right: fuel is drawn in through the inlet (top arrow); a spark ignites the fuel,causing an explosion that turns the rotor (triangular,centre) to drive the engine; exhaust gasses are then expelled though the outlet (bottom arrow). This engine was invented by the German engineer Felix Wankel,who received his first patent for the design in 1929 and completed a working prototype in 1957.
