Storm chasing. Tornado researchers outside a Doppler on Wheels (DOW) portable weather radar truck, documenting a rapidly approaching supercell thunderstorm. A supercell thunderstorm is a severe long-lived storm within which the wind speed and direction changes with height. This produces a strong rotating updraft of warm air (a mesocyclone) as well as a separate downdraft of cold air. Supercell thunderstorms are capable of producing tornadoes. This truck is one of more than 100 research vehicles that participated in VORTEX 2,an unprecedented two-year research project to study tornadoes in the United States in 2009 and 2010.
