|Animation of sperm cells swimming. Sperm cells are released in huge numbers, but only one can fertilise an egg cell. Each sperm cell contains half the father's genome, which will combine with an egg cell carrying half the mother's genome, producing an individual with a unique genome. The sperm cells all contain a slightly different combination of the father's genome, so which cell wins the race for the egg has a fundamental effect on the genome of the child.
