Lisbon 1755 earthquake tsunami, planetary model. The epicentre of the 8.5-moment magnitude earthquake was several hundred kilometres south-west of Lisbon, Portugal. The resulting damage, fire and tsunami caused the near total destruction of the city, with an estimated 90, 000 killed from a population of around 275, 000. The death toll was increased by people rushing to the open space of the docks as buildings collapsed around them, only to be engulfed by the tsunami that followed. This model, by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC), uses the Real-Time Forecasting of Tsunamis (RIFT) forecast model to show the tsunami waves spreading through the world's oceans. The animation covers a span of 48 hours, with the coastal colours showing how high the waves were, ranging from blue-green (no hazard, less than 30 centimetres), to yellow-orange (low hazard, 30 to 100 centimetres), light to bright red (significant hazard, 1 to 3 metres) and dark red (severe hazard, greater than 3 metres) |
