Animation of the inputs and outputs of a combination of logic gates that form a half adder. A half adder can perform the addition of numbers. It is constructed of an XOR gate and an AND gate. The system has two inputs, A and B, which are split to carry the same input to both gates. The output of the XOR gate is called the sum (S) and the output of the AND gate is called the carry (C). The logic table and the results of the addition are shown at lower right. When either input A or B is on (blue), the sum output is on. When both the inputs are on, the output is the carry. This system performs the addition of the inputs, with off being zero and on being one. Two half adders can be combined with an OR gate to form a full adder, which can take an input from a previous adder and pass its output to the next adder in the system, hence carrying the number to the next highest significant figure. See clip K007 6877 for a similar diagram showing a full adder. | |
