A Black-backed jackal (Canis mesomelas) drinking from a puddle after the summer rains have fallen. This scavenger usually feeds on the carrion left after a larger predator has made a kill but is also capable of killing birds and small mammals. It inhabits the grasslands, plains and south-western deserts of Africa. Its diverse diet includes small mammals, eggs, birds, insects, reptiles and some fruits. Filmed in the Nossob riverbed of the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, southern Africa. | |
