Many researchers believe that amyloid and tau are proteins associated with Alzheimer's Disease. This animation visualizes both proteins and links them to cerebral spinal fluid. The proteins are located within cerebral spinal fluid, thus the fluid can be tested for levels of amyloid and tau. If the levels of these proteins show significant change, researchers believe that the amyloid peptide may be accumulating and forming plaques, which could affect the signalling pathways that connect amyloid and tau. In turn, amyloid plaques will also cause a build-up of tau. These plaque conglomerates form around nerve cells in the brain, and are thought to cause nerve cell death and negatively effect memory, cognition, and decision-making skills. | |
